We have made a new version of the SmartACCESSIBILITY Product available to users for FREE. Using a bookmarklet (find out more about bookmarklets) you can now check any page on your website instantly for accessibility, structure and image formatting.

  • To ‘install’ right click on the this icon Instant SmartACCESSIBILITY Check and select the add bookmark or add favourite option.
  • To try it out just click the above icon, we have some deliberate errors on this page

Other Solutions

We also provide a site installation option for the SmartACCESSIBILITY checker which all of our web clients can request for free. Other clients can have this installed on request. The advantages of this over the instant checker is that the load times are reduced and the toolbar can be tailored and made visible to all site editors.

Additionally we can provide a full site accessibility check and correction service please contact us for further information.

Installation

You don’t actually “install” a bookmarklet, you simply add it to your bookmarks. Then it just sits there until you want to use it.

To add: Right click on the above bookmark icon, and select the bookmark option.

Tip! Add it to your links toolbar for faster access: You can drag the bookmarklet icon onto your ‘links’ toolbar using your mouse. To do this click and hold the mouse button down over the link and then whilst still holding the button drag it onto your links toolbar. When you release the mouse button the bookmarklet will be added to the toolbar.

Using the bookmarklet

To use the bookmarklet you go to the web page you wish to check and then select the bookmark named ‘Instant SmartACCESSIBILITY Check’. In the top right of the screen a new icon and text will appear showing that the Bookmarklet is loading. After a short while, a few seconds, a dialog box will pop up with the results of the check.

Explaining the results…

You can click on the bookmark you have just installed or just check this page. Note: the checker may take several seconds to load and run so please be patient. To give you an example of the errors detected we have added a few to this page along with some explanations below:

Accessibility Errors

Images without alternative text

Headings that jump from level 2 to level 6 directly.

Like word headings should outline your document and should therefore never jump more than one level.

Heading 6

Web page warnings

The tool also has some general guideline warnings built in for web page elements that are non-standard or sub optimal. It detects when very large images will slow down page loading and when an image has been sized using the web browser rather than in a graphic design program.

Images resized by the browser

The screenshot image above is an example of this and will result in a ‘Warning’ in the results of the checker.
